- Over a period of one week, collect examples of graph types (i.e., bar graphs, circle graphs/pie charts, line graphs) from newspapers, magazines or journals. At the end of the week, look at each of the graph examples and determine whether they are appropriate or whether the statistics would have been better presented with a different type of graph.
- What type of graph would you use to present the following? Explain your choice.
- the number of female students in each grade in your school
- the annual number of road fatalities (the road toll) in your province or territory over the last 30 years
- the speed (km/h) of the world's 20 fastest animals
- the total population of Canada, the provinces and territories
- Discuss as a class the different situations where a horizontal or a vertical bar graph would be most useful.
