OTTAWA — Recently, Statistics Canada was informed of the possibility that data, including key economic data, were being made available to secondary distributors of its public database (CANSIM) prior to official release time.

After a preliminary review, Statistics Canada confirmed that data had been made available no more than 59 seconds in advance of the official release time, at least an hour before North American markets opened.

Management took immediate steps to resolve this situation. Data releases are now all made available at the exact same time.

We at Statistics Canada are committed to protecting the confidentiality of all information entrusted to us and to ensuring that the information we deliver is timely and relevant to Canadians.

In addition to the steps already taken, Statistics Canada will continue to review access logs of such transfers. The agency will take any additional measures necessary to fully ensure that all users of its data—including distributors—have access to the data at the same time.
