Ottawa — Canadians value the census and understand its importance in good decision-making. Earlier this week, Statistics Canada was informed about inconsistencies in the 2016 Census findings for English language in select communities in the province of Quebec.

Statistics Canada has conducted a thorough review and found that an error in a computer program caused language responses for approximately 61,000 people to be misclassified.

We are working diligently to correct the information and publish updated findings next week. We are also taking steps to further strengthen our quality control procedures.

Statistics Canada regrets any inconvenience caused by this error and remains dedicated to publishing high-quality information.
