February 14th is Valentine's Day!

Named for Saint Valentine, this is a day when people express their love by sending cards, exchanging gifts of chocolate, roses or personal items, and even sharing romantic dinners by candlelight.

Here are some facts on assorted topics related to Valentine's Day.

All couples

  • 8,227,925 — The total number of couples in private households in Canada in 2016. Slightly under 6.5 million were married couples, and over 1.7 million were common law couples.

  • 16,455,840 — The total number of persons, aged 15 and over, living in a couple in private households in Canada in 2016. This includes opposite-sex and same-sex married spouses and common-law partners.

Singles

  • 12,418,440 — The total number of persons, aged 15 and over, not living in a couple in Canada in 2016. This includes never-married, divorced, separated and widowed persons.

Same-sex couples

Same-sex couples accounted for 0.9% of all couples in 2016.

The number of same-sex married couples grew 60.7% between 2006 and 2016—the first full 10‑year period in which same-sex marriage was legal across the country.

  • 72,880 — The number of same-sex couple families in 2016.
  • 24,370 — The number of same-sex married couples in 2016.
  • 48,510 — The number of same-sex common-law couples in 2016.

One couple, two addresses

  • 1.9 million — The number of Canadians who said they were in a couple with someone in 2011 but lived at separate addresses. This is slightly more than 7% of the population aged 20 and over, down from 8% in 2001.

Second union

  • About 3 in 10 — The proportion of people aged 55 to 64 in 2011 who had experienced at least two unions during their lifetime. Among people aged 65 and over, the proportion was roughly 2 in 10.

Love at any age

  • 14% — The proportion of senior couples with an age difference of 10 years or more in 2011. This compares with 18% in 1981.
  • 49% — The proportion of senior couples with an age difference of three years or less in 2011. This compares with 40% in 1981.

(A "senior couple" is one in which at least one partner is aged 65 or over.)

A special meal

  • $2,608 — The average annual spending on food purchased from restaurants by Canadian households in 2016.

The term "restaurants" includes full-service restaurants, fast-food outlets and cafeterias, as well as refreshments stands, snack bars, vending machines, mobile canteens, caterers and chip wagons. These expenditures include tips and do not include expenditures for alcoholic beverages.

  • $2.89 billion — The value of cosmetics and fragrances sold at retailers in Canada in 2015.
  • $1.77 billion — The value of women's lingerie, sleepwear and intimates sold at retailers in Canada in 2015.
  • $796.2 million — The value of men's underwear, sleepwear and hosiery sold at retailers in Canada in 2015.
