- Articles and reports: 91F0015M2024002Description: This paper examines the emigration of immigrants using the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB). An indirect definition of emigration is proposed that leverages the information available in the IMDB. This study found that emigration of immigrants is a significant phenomenon. Certain characteristics of immigrants, such as having children, admission category and country of birth, have a strong correlation with emigration.Release date: 2024-02-02

The Canadian Social Environment Typology (CanSET) is a geographic classification tool to compare neighbourhoods across Canadian Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations. The purpose of this user guide is to define the concept of identical Dissemination Area (DA) clusters used in the Canadian Social Environment Typology (CanSET) and to give an overview of how the clusters can be used to explore DA level health and social inequalities. The user guide also offers information on how to use the new social environment clusters to understand social and health inequalities in more populous areas in Canada.

Currently, Statistics Canada does not provide a geographic unit representative of downtown neighbourhoods within its standard geographic classification. The objective of this article is to identify areas which accurately represent the downtowns located in the census metropolitan areas (CMA) of Canada, using Censuses of Population and local knowledge. These boundaries will allow a more effective dissemination of essential statistics by Statistics Canada, especially in the context of future census data releases.

This article examines the differences in COVID-19 related mortality rates across different ethno-cultural neighbourhoods in Canada. The differences in age-standardized mortality rates by proportion of population groups designated as visible minorities are compared for Canada and selected provinces and census metropolitan areas to understand whether or not communities with higher proportion of population designated as visible minorities are reporting higher COVID-19 related mortality rates.

The concepts of urban and rural are widely debated and vary depending on a country’s geopolitical and sociodemographic composition. In Canada, population centres and statistical area classifications are widely used to distinguish urban and rural communities. However, neither of these classifications precisely classify Canadian communities into urban, rural and remote areas. A group of researchers at Statistics Canada developed an alternative tool called the “remoteness index” to measure the relative remoteness of Canadian communities. This study builds on the remoteness index, which is a continuous index, by examining how it can be classified into five discrete categories of remoteness geographies. When properly categorized, the remoteness index can be a useful tool to distinguish urban, rural and remote communities in Canada, while protecting the privacy and confidentiality of citizens. This study considers five methodological approaches and recommends three methods.
Release date: 2020-08-11 - Articles and reports: 11F0019M2020004Description:
Unlike economic and family class immigrants, who mostly make their own choice about where to settle in Canada, the initial geographic location of refugees is strongly influenced by government resettlement programs. Government-assisted refugees (GARs) are assigned to one of many designated communities based on a pre-approved regional quota of refugee allocation and the match between a refugee’s needs and community resources. Privately sponsored refugees (PSRs) are received by their sponsors, who are scattered across the country. While previous research suggests that refugees, especially GARs, are more likely to undertake secondary migration than other immigrants, no large-scale quantitative study has compared the rates of departure from initial destination cities for different immigrant categories in the long term. This study compares long-term secondary migration in Canada by immigrant admission category, with a focus on the size of the initial city of settlement.

-
-
Use “or” between keywords to obtain results that contain one or more search terms.
-
For example, labour or force or survey will limit results to products containing any or all of these words.
-
How does the search work?
-
This search looks for results that have your query term in the title, description, subject, geography, product number or other information about the product.
-
For example, when searching the term ‘Diseases’, all results with the word ‘Diseases’ in the title, description or tagged the subject appear.
