How do I find out more?
On January 1st, 1998, Statistics Canada and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) launched the national implementation of the Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED) program. This program gives registered exporters and agents the opportunity to report goods electronically to the Federal Government of Canada instead of via the paper-based reporting method.
The introduction of this program represents the culmination of consultations with representatives of the Canadian Exporting community, CBSA, Statistics Canada, and other Government Departments. Following this consultation process, an eight-month pilot of the CAED software was undertaken which involved 90 participants representing approximately 135 Canadian Exporting firms.
This user-friendly software package, available free of charge, automates the preparation of CBSA's B13A, Export Declaration. It provides exporters or their agents the ability to transmit completed Export Declarations directly to the Federal Government of Canada via the Internet.
The CAED software features Harmonized system commodity classification search, built-in encryption software, memorizable screens, extensive on-line help and Internet transmission capabililties. The user has a choice to use CAED as a stand-alone application or in a multi-user environment (LAN).
This facility allows exporters or their agents the ability to transfer the data elements required for CBSA's B13A Export Declaration directly into the CAED Windows Software from their current processing system. Users can then transmit their completed Export Declarations via the Internet through the embedded CAED transmission protocol.
As CAED participants, exporters will no longer be required to submit paper B13A, Export Declarations to CBSA at the time of exportation, with the following exception: In addition to the automated report, any shipments of controlled, prohibited or regulated goods will require a CAED generated paper Export Declaration to be presented to CBSA along with the appropriate permit, certificate, or license, prior to exportation, regardless of the goods' value, if the goods are destined for consumption outside the U.S. market.

If you are an exporter and want to participate in the program, you must have a valid Business Number that has been activated for exporting. Click on "Business Number" to find out why it is needed, and how to obtain one.
3.1 CAED users/participants must register with the CAED Helpdesk. To register, print the application form found in the Registration Information section. Complete and sign the form, and either fax or mail it to:

3.2 Upon receipt of the application, an Officer will verify that the BN is active for exporting and will then contact the applicant.
4.1 Once the Registration process has been completed, the software can either be downloaded from the Internet or be sent to the applicant on CD ROM. To Download the software click on CAED software tab, then go to "CAED Software 2009 version 9.00" link.
4.2 Once the CAED software has been acquired, the CAED helpdesk will provide the applicant with a unique licence # and authorization ID that will identify the applicant as an authorized CAED user. An appointment will be arranged with the applicant by a CAED helpdesk officer to introduce the applicant to the software and to create and transmit a sample test file. The CAED helpdesk will verify the successful receipt of the transmitted file the next business day. Once a test transmission has been properly received, the applicant will be notified by the CAED helpdesk that they can begin to report their exports electronically using the CAED software.
