The counts appearing on the Canada's population clock might differ from estimates and projections released by Statistics Canada. Canada's population clock is strictly a pedagogic tool and the displayed counts should be used as a rough indication of the current population levels.

The counts are based on rates calculated using demographic estimates for the year ending on June 30, 2011. These rates were applied to the preliminary postcensal population estimates as of July 1, 2011 and kept constant. According to these rates:

  • Canada’s population would increase by 361,317 during the year 2011-2012, an average increase of one unit every minute and 28 seconds. At this rate, the population of Canada would reach 34,844,096 by July 1st, 2012.
  • Canada’s number of births in 2011-2012 would be at 391,121, an average increase of one birth every minute and 21 seconds.
  • Canada’s number of immigrants in 2011-2012 would be at 262,332, an average increase of one immigrant every 2 minutes and 1 second.
