Explanation of the graphs

Males: Males are fairly evenly distributed across the major trade groups, but there is a significantly higher number in construction programs. In the mid-1990s, Canada experienced a recession, and as such, construction demand was decreased. As Canada came out of the recession, the number of males registered in construction trade programs increased, which was represented in an overall increase in apprenticeship program registrations by males.

Females: There are very few females registered in apprenticeship programs and this number is particularly low in construction. The vast majority of females in apprenticeship programs are in service trades, a field that is not significantly affected by economic recessions. Thus, during the recession, the overall number of females registered in apprenticeship programs was not significantly affected. There has been an overall increase in the number of females registered in apprenticeship programs as there has been increased marketing to this under-represented group.
