A. Retrieving statistical information for a community from the "Students and teachers" section of Statistics Canada's Web site (/learningresources)

  1. From the left-hand side bar, select Community Profiles.
  2. Type in the name of the community you are researching.
  3. The data you will need to answer the questions in Section C (below) can be found in the table 'Age Characteristics'.
  4. Find the following characteristics:
    • Total population by sex and age groups
    • 0–4 years, Male population
    • 5–14 years, Male population 
    • 15–19 years, Male population
    • 0–4 years, Female population
    • 5–14 years, Female population  
    • 15–19 years, Female population
  5. Copy the data into your worksheet.
  6. Calculate the total population of people 14 years of age and younger in your community.
  7. Calculate the ratio of 15–19 year–olds to 0–14 year-olds.

C. Using your table, answer the following questions:

  1. What is the population of your community?
  2. What is the total number of males and females 15–19 years of age?
  3. What is the total number of males and females 0–14 years of age?
  4. How many potential babysitters are there in your community? Do you think all of these individuals are interested in babysitting?
  5. If each family has 1.8 children and the parents want a sitter once a week, how many potential jobs would there be in your community?
  6. Will there be a lot of competition for these babysitting jobs? What does this imply for the hourly rate a babysitter can charge?
  7. Do you think these age ranges present the most accurate picture of the job market for babysitters in your community? Why or why not?
  8. If you were the parent of a young family looking for a new house or apartment, what would be the ideal demographic profile to look for?
