Map Interpretation I

Overview

The students learn how to interpret maps using Ice Storm 1998: Maps and Facts from Statistics Canada. The students are divided into groups and are asked to chart their findings, discuss the problems found and give solutions. Each group has one of the coloured maps printed from the website publication on a colour printer.

Classroom Instructions

  1. Have the class form six groups. Assign one map from the publication. They must discuss their map, and on chart paper
    1. identify the areas hardest hit
    2. discuss the impact
    3. outline the problems (short/long term)
    4. propose solutions (i.e., who's responsible for clean-up, etc.).

  2. Then have each group present their data to class (perhaps have them pretend they are presenting their data to a group who distributes aid).
