Researching on the Web

Overview

Students will use the Internet to search for data on the impact of the ice storm in the United States.


Objectives

  • To introduce other students to using the Internet
  • To gather U.S. data on the 1998 ice storm
  • To compare the similarities and differences in data collection and availability

Materials

  • computer with Internet access

Classroom instructions

  1. Have students work in pairs (one computer-literate and one not) until all students are on individual machines.
  2. Assign each student to an area or region of the United States that was affected by the ice storm. Students should start their search at the area's/region's tourist pages.
  3. Have students try to match the U.S. data to our Canadian data.
  4. Have students explore reasons for their results.
  5. Challenge students to get primary data.
