Stories of the Ice Storm

Ice Storm Story
by Philippe
McMaster Catholic School
Ottawa, Ontario

In the morning at 7:00 I woke up and went to the kitchen and the power started to flicker, and poof the power went out. Then my sister screamed and outside it was snowing very hard and there was also ice rain. I said “this is great” so my Mom and Dad lit some candles and got some flash lights. The power was off for about 3 hours and there was no school that day. My mom wasn’t happy. All my trees broke and the tree with my tree-house in it broke in 3 pieces. One broke in behind my neighbours yard and broke his phone wire. Then we went to my dad’s friends house. His power was on. We had lots of fun there. Clayton’s house is not too big and my sister Angel and Kyle played hide and seek in the dark. It was really fun.

One day my cousins, Matthew, Adam and Michael came to my house they explained that since the power was off the heater wouldn’t work and it was cold, so they decided to come to my house. When they were undressed they watched me play Nintendo. Then I showed Matthew some of my computer games. Then it was time for dinner it was delicious. We played all week, but on Jan.12 they had to go back because the power was back on. But they let me sleep over at their house I agreed I waved goodbye to mommy and daddy and I was on my way, but that’s another story.

Ice Storm Story

One night I was sleeping then I awakend because I was so cold. My grand-mother said that there no power due to the Ice Storm. So I had to stay in bed with four big blankets. My grand-mother put candles all over the house. Our dog Ginger lay at my feet. By 8:00 am my mother came over with a big thermos of coffee and bagels. We were told that our power could be out for days. My mother went to the store for my nanny to get a supply of food, candles, matches, and fondue fuel and a coal oil lamp I found the time very long so I played lots of games. I invited Kathy over to play. This was my first experience with an ice storm all the cars were slipping and sliding the branches were snapping. I was scared because I thought we would freeze. I slept over at my aunt and uncle's house and the power came back on the next day . I was so happy that I could get warm and watch TV. And go to bed.

Marc, Rachel, Nina and Bob woke up and we all went outside to see what happened. We saw our tree branches falling. The next day every thing was better. We looked all around we saw whole bunch of tree branches falling down, Me and Marc said “poor tree!” Then we went back inside the house. There was no buses for school so I had to get a drive from my dad, but my mom said “are you sure you want to go to school Carla?” “yes I'm sure.” The end

It was the early January and the year 1998. Also on a winter day. It was probably an evening changing into a night. It was in the lovely country Canada and in its province of Ontario and in a city called Ottawa, where everyone is eating their supper or maybe just doing some other stuff!

IT ALL STARTED LIKE THIS....

All was still in the city of Ottawa and everybody was doing normal business until a little breeze floated across Ottawa and no one really cared because it’s just a normal breeze! The Weekend came then went and Monday was here in Ottawa and on that day you wouldn’t believe it but that one breeze brought a STORM to Ottawa! BAD/SAD things started to happen, such as powerout, cows dying, people having to go to Emergency-Shelters and another worse things was that Hydro people have to work hard day and night, and also Army had to move in to help out! Well there’s some little things that also happened to like even some people didn’t even get powerout or anything, as a matter a fact some people were so lucky. And there were so many things cancelled like school buses, schools, works, daycare, sports events. Well any way this was one big storm!!! And guess what happened to me? Just a little bit of things well about two to be certain! I’ll start telling you the story that I call Ahh!!........

It was a weekday on the 9th of January 1998 at night and I was reading a little book and my brother Joseph was playing a game on our computer. I think he was in my room and I was on my bed. My mom was downstairs doing some exercising my dad was at work so you don’t have to worry about him till later in the story. Suddenly Boom..... the power was out and my little brother Joseph was so scared! (my bed is a little further from the computer in my room witch was the one that Joseph was playing on) when the power went out Joseph started to scream, my mom downstairs, was not scared but it was hard for her to get around because when power is out the downstairs is so dark. So it took her a little time to get to my room which was upstairs if you didn’t know. Then when my mom got to my room my mom grabbed Joseph’s and my hand and brought us to her room to find the flashlight. She finally found it. The only problem was that we couldn’t light a candle because we didn’t have any matches. So our only hope was the flashlight. Too bad we only managed to find two flash lights! After the big long search we went to the phone in my kitchen my mom told me to call my dad, so I called his number from the number page which was a page with all of the most important numbers for Emergencies. So I told him about the power and while I told him about Joseph and his crying, the downstairs light came on which meant that the POWER WAS BACK ON! So I told my dad and we hung-up and my mom thought that maybe the Hydro people cut the wrong wire and after a while fixed it again or something like that!

There’s one more small thing that happened to me but this one involves more of a complaining story! The story that I’m about to say is called THAT TREE! IT STARTS OFF LIKE THIS...... I guess you have already heard about the Ice Storm every where. I was watching TV and Joseph was all so watching TV, my mom was just upstairs doing something (I guess) because she wasn’t downstairs with me or Joseph! Then “Ding Dong” went the door bell, so my mom opened the door and it was some guy then I looked carefully at the man and it was my neighbour! But he didn’t look very happy about something. Well I saw him pointing and saying something like “come look”, or something to my mom in a grumpy way. So my mom put on her coat and boots and hat and went outside to see why was the man complaining about! When she came back she told me that he said that our tree branch was about to fall on their house! And she also told me that a long time ago my dad and one of my dads best friends were about to cut that same tree but the next door lady said to my dad not to cut that tree because it might fall on her house while they cut it! (So anyway,) after that the man came back my mom told him about what his wife told to my dad and his best friend, but he said that she never said that! Than the next day which was Saturday the lady came and went “Ding Dong”, to our doorbell so when my mom came to open the door the lady said that she didn’t say that she told my dad not to cut the tree but to do something else which I can’t remember. So my mom talked to my dad when he got home and told him everything about our neighbours and the tree. So the next day my dad went and told the man something and that stopped the whole fight and argument!

Well thats all about my stories and I hope you enjoyed them. But just one thing I know that I am very lucky compared with a lot of other people who have suffered a lot because of this BAD/SAD storm. Thanks to God.

The End
