Teenage pregnancy trends in Canada

  1. Read the selection "Teenage pregnancies", being sure to read the "Methods", "Definitions", and "International" sections and examine the included tables and charts/graphs as well as the Appendix (Table A).
  2. Answer the following questions briefly, in preparation for discussion in a small group:
    1. In your own words, state two health-related and two non-health-related problems associated with teenage pregnancy.
    2. Describe how the pregnancy rate for ages 15 to 19 changed between 1974 and 1997. Can you think of any possible reasons for this pattern?
    3. From chart 3 of the Teenage pregnancies article, estimate the percentage of pregnancies for ages 15 to 19 that ended in abortion in 1974 and 1997. What reasons can you give for the increase in the incidence of abortion?
    4. Which age group, 18 to 19 or 15 to 17, had the higher abortion rate in 1997? Which age group, 18 to 19 or 15 to 17, had the higher rate of pregnancies in 1997?
  3. In a small group (3-4 members) review your questions/answers together and draw some logical and accurate conclusions.
