'Car culture'

We've seen that cars, trucks and vans are by far the most commonly chosen methods for transportation. Now, we will investigate this fact further.

Find Section 1.2.3 Land impacts (page 18). Take note of the main points as you read through this summary (it runs onto the next page).  Look over the two maps in Figure 1.1 Connectivity, city centre versus suburban.

This article examines many reasons why car culture and suburbanization have shaped our transportation trends.

In two complete and thorough paragraphs,

  1. Explain the challenges of servicing suburban areas with public transportation given the spatial arrangement/layout of these areas.
  2. Explain what you would do as a community planner to improve public transportation use.

Your explanations could vary. For example, you might explain how you could encourage more people to settle in the more accessible inner city; how you could build a suburban area to be public transportation friendly; how you could retrofit/improve an already built suburban area to be public transportation friendly.
