Student worksheet

  1. On the E-STAT sidebar select Search CANSIM.
  2. In the search field enter the table number 051-0006 and click Search. (The title of the table is "Immigrants to Canada, by country of last permanent residence, quarterly (persons).)
  3. At the Subset selection under Geography, select Canada.
  4. Under Last permanent residence, select Total Europe and Total Asia.
  5. Under Reference period: select From: Jan. 1955 to the most current time period.
  6. Click Retrieve as individual Time Series.
  7. Under the heading SCREEN OUTPUT formats select line graph and click Retrieve now at the bottom of the page.

Answer the following questions:

  1. Describe the trends shown in the line graph (2 — 3 sentences).

  2. What impact might these trends have on Canadian society? Here are a few suggestions: small businesses, grocery stores, the education system, cultural events.

  3. Produce another line graph, this time with Total Asia and United States.

  4. What year had the largest number of American immigrants? What was happening to the numbers of Asian immigrants around the same time?

  5. What conflict was occuring at this time that would explain these two immigration trends? Explain how this conflict would affect the number of American immigrants and Asian immigrants.
