How to find a Census table using the E-STAT Table of contents from the left sidebar

At the E-STAT Table of Contents page, under the heading Historical Censuses of Canada, select 1665-1871.

At the Database selection, select 1861 - Census of Nova Scotia (General).

At the Profile Selection, select 1861 NS Table XII. - Ship Building and Fisheries.

You are now at the Geography and Characteristics selection screen.

At the Selection page, under geographic region, select 1861 Nova Scotia, 19 areas.

How to select your characteristic

At the Selection page, under characteristics, select the following:

  • Ship Building - Vessels launched - Number
  • Ship Building - Vessels launched - Tonnage
  • Ship Building - Vessels building - Number
  • Ship Building - Vessels building - Tonnage
  • Ship Building - Boats built

How to produce a map

Click the Map icon.

Map all characteristics. (Remember when mapping you can only select and display one characteristic at a time).

You should now have four maps to analyse for Task 1 — Shipbuilding.

Note: You can only map one characteristic at a time.

Click Display name & value button. Click Redraw map.  Next, click an area to display its name and value.
