Student worksheet B, using 1998 data

  1. From the E-STAT sidebar select Search CANSIM in E-STAT .
  2. In the search field, enter the table number 110-0001 and click Search. (The title of the table is "Tobacco and alcohol use by students in selected countries, every 4 years")
  3. At the Subset selection under Geography (30 items), select Canada and four other countries.
  4. Under Sex (2 items), choose Select all.
  5. Under Age group (3 items), choose Select all.
  6. Under Activity (5 items), select Smoke tobacco.
  7. Under Frequency (8 items) select Every day and Less than once a week (tobacco only).
  8. Under Reference period: select From: 1998.
  9. Click Retrieve as a table.
  10. Under the heading SCREEN OUTPUT formats select HTML table, time as columns and click Retrieve now at the bottom of the page.

A. Using the table you have created, answer the following questions:

  1. Who is smoking more - the females or the males in Canada? Is this different in other countries?




  2. When comparing data on smoking by age in Canada, would you say that the numbers of females and males smoking increases with age? Describe any trends which may be evident from the data. Is this different in other countries?




  3. Are there more daily smokers in Canada than occasional smokers? List possible reasons. Is this different in other countries?




B. Have the class compare the results from this graph with recent material covered in The Daily.



C. Take 10 minutes and have students raise questions based on the opinions that they have formed on the material covered in class.
