Suicides and suicide rates: Student worksheet

Working independently, students create a bar chart of the male and female suicide rates for the different age groups.

  1. Copy statistical information from the table ‘Suicides and suicide rate, by sex and by age group' to complete the table below.

Number of suicides and suicide rate for males and females
      Age groups
      1 to 14 15 to 19 20 to 24 25 to 44 45 to 64 65 and over
    Male—Number of suicides
    Male—Suicide rate
    Female—Number of suicides
    Female—Suicide rate
  2. Use the information in your table to create a bar chart. Make sure your graph has a title, labels and a source.
  3. Which sex has the higher suicide rate?
  4. What age group has the highest suicide rate?
  5. Look at the original Statistics Canada table again. Would the age group and sex be the same if you were looking at the number of suicides instead of the rate of suicide?
  6. If you were running a community support program, which age groups and sex would you target for your suicide prevention program?
