Finding the right table using Search Census

  • From the E-STAT sidebar select Search Censuses.
  • Under Select a Census, select 2006 Census (the default selection) and click the Go! button.
  • Under 2006 Census, select 2006 Census of Population (48 Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Tracts) and click the Go! button.
  • Under Profile selection, select 2006 Cumulative Profile and click on the Go! button.

Geography and Characteristics selection

  • Under Step 1: Select a geographic region, select 2006 - Provinces and Territories in Canada.
  • Under Step 2: Select one or more characteristics, select the following variables:
  • Population 15 to 24 years - Labour force activity
  • Participation rate, population 15 to 24 years - Labour force activity
  • Employment rate, population 15 to 24 years - Labour force activity  
  • Population 25 years and over - Labour force activity
  • Participation rate, population 25 years and over - Labour force activity
  • Unemployment rate, population 25 years and over - Labour force activity
  • After selecting your characteristics, click on the icon Reduce or sort geo list.
  • Select data for Ontario and two other regions.
  • Click on the icon Table — Areas as Columns.
  • Copy the data to the tables below. In the tables,
    • P = population
    • PR = participation rate
    • UR = unemployment rate
    • LF = labour force
    • U = unemployed

    Answer the following questions:

    1. Look at the E-STAT table. Compare the unemployment rate of youth (15–24 years) with that of adults (25 years and over) across Canada. Describe your observations.
    2. Complete the tables by calculating the following:
    The actual number of people participating in the labour market   Labour Force = P x PR
    100
    The total number of people unemployed   Unemployed = LF x UR
    100
    HINT: In order to verify your calculations for Labour force and Unemployed, follow the instructions below:

    1. Click on Back twice.
    2. Under Characteristics, select :

    • In the labour force, population 15-24 years
    • Unemployed , population 15-24 years
    • In the labour force, population 25 years and over
    • Unemployed , population 25 years and over
    3 . Click on the icon Reduce and Sort Geo list and select Ontario and the same two provinces.
    4. Click on the icon Table-Areas as Columns.

    REMINDER: Your numbers may differ from E-STAT because of the rounding.
