Introduction to the Geography of Canada, Geography 290

Overview/Abstract

This assignment is a term paper in a second year introductory course on the geography of Canada. The theme of the course is the political economy of regionalism in Canada, that is the mixture of political and economic influences that help create regional identities. Students are encouraged to use numeric census data to understand the historic and contemporary differences between provinces in two regions of the country. The assignment, valued at 30 to 40% of the course which draws on Canadian census data from Statistics Canada, has worked well in this course, and could be easily adapted to courses at other sites.
