Chart 2   In younger age groups, second language learners make up the majority of people speaking endangered Aboriginal languages

This chart illustrates the percentage of the population speaking an Aboriginal language who learned it as a second language, depending on whether that language is classified as endangered or viable. The population is divided by age group. Of those speaking an endangered Aboriginal language as their second language, 71% are under age 15, 60% are aged 15 to 24, 45% are aged 25 to 44, 24% are aged 45 to 64, and 17% are aged 65 or older. Of those speaking a viable Aboriginal language as their second language, 20% are under age 15, 23% are aged 15 to 24, 19% are aged 25 to 44, 15% are aged 45 to 64, and 11% are aged 65 or older. These data are from the 2001 Census of Population.
