This chart shows the predicted proportion of immigrants with a given mother tongue who use that language at work conditional on the proportion who speak the language in the community (CSD) where they work. Gender, age at immigration, time in Canada, education and country of education are all controlled for. The chart illustrates the relationship for males who immigrated at age 24, have been in Canada 5 years and have a university degree earned outside of Canada the US or the UK. A line is shown for each of five mother tongue groups: Chinese languages, Punjabi, Italian, Portuguese and Vietnamese. The lines are straight and all radiate out from between 0.1 and 0.2 and rise as the proportion of people who speak the same language in the community of employment increases. The line for the Vietnamese is the steepest and is predicted to rise to 0.8 when 10% of persons in the CSD where they work speak Vietnamese. The next strongest relationship is for the Portuguese followed by those with a Chinese mother tongue and those with Punjabi and those with Italian in that order.
