Chart 6.1 is a bar chart showing the value of residential and non-residential building permits from 2000 to 2011.

The value of residential building permits rose from $20 billion in 2000 to a high of $46 billion in 2007. It decreased to $35 billion in 2009, then increased to $44 billion in 2011.

The value of non-residential building permits rose from $17 billion in 2000 to $30 billion in 2008. It decreased to $26 billion in 2009, then increased to $29 billion in 2011.
