Chart 7.1 is a line chart showing police-reported crime rates for total crime, violent crime, property crime and other Criminal Code crime from 1970 to 2010. Rates for all crimes have fallen since the 1990s.

The total crime rate increased from a low of 5,212 per 100,000 people in 1970 to a high of 10,342 per 100,000 people in 1991. It declined  to 5,963 crimes per 100,000 people in 2010.

The violent crime rate increased from a low of 481 crimes per 100,000 people in 1970 to a high of 1,084 crimes per 100,000 people in 1992. It declined to 899 crimes per 100,000 people in 2010.

The property crime rate increased from 3,515 per 100,000 people in 1970 to a high of 6,160 per 100,000 people in 1991. It decreased to a low of 2,631 per 100,000 people in 2010.

The crime rate for other Criminal Code offences, which excludes traffic, drug offences and other federal statutes, increased from a low of 1,170 offences per 100,000 people in 1971 to a high of 3,122 per 100,000 people in 1991. It declined slowly to 2,449 per 100,000 people in 1999, and then was relatively stable. In 2010, the rate was 2,423 offences per 100,000 people.
