  • Total fertility rates in OECD countries have declined over the past few decades, falling from 2.7 children per woman of childbearing age in 1970 to 1.6 in the 2000s.
  • In all OECD countries, fertility rates have declined for young women and increased at older ages.
  • In Canada, the fertility rate was 2.33 children per woman of childbearing age in 1970; it fell to 1.58 by 1997, remained at similar levels until 2004 and has been slowly increasing since 2005.
