Chart 21.1 is a line chart showing the median age at retirement for private sector employees, public sector employees and self-employed workers from 1981 to 2011. The self-employed workers category includes unpaid family workers.

The median age at retirement for the self-employed was relatively stable from 1981 to 2011 at around 65 years of age. It reached a high in 1993 and again in 2005 at 65.9 and a low in 2008 at 63.9. In 2011, the median retirement age for self-employed was 65.1.

The median retirement age varied somewhat more for private sector employees, gradually declining from 65.0 in 1982 to 61.4 in 2002 before rising to 63.2 in 2011.

Public sector employees saw a decline in their median age at retirement, from 64.8 in 1981 to 57.2 in 1999. It then gradually increased to 60.4 in 2011.
