Chart 23.1 is a line chart showing the average annual percentage change in manufacturing sales, unfilled orders and total inventory from 2001 to 2011.

Manufacturing sales rose annually from 2002 to 2006, in a range from 0.7% to 3.4%. Sales then declined annually for three years. In 2007, sales fell 1.3%; in 2009, they dropped 17.8%. In 2010 and 2011, sales increased about 8% annually.

Unfilled orders followed a different pattern. Their annual percentage change was negative from 2002 to 2004, in a range from minus 18.8% to minus 0.3%. Growth was then positive from 2005 to 2008, in a range from 9.7% to 20.3%. Unfilled orders then declined by about 9% in both 2009 and 2010, and increased by 10.4% in 2011.

The total inventory of manufacturing goods varied relatively little from 2001 to 2008. In 2009, it decreased 6.5% and in 2010, it decreased 5.1%. In 2011, total inventory rose 7.3%.
