Chart 27.1 is a stacked area chart showing federal expenditures on science and technology from 1999/2000 to 2011/2012, by category. Data for 2011/2012 are preliminary.
Spending on both research and development (R&D) and on related scientific activities steadily increased from 1999/2000 to 2010/2011, except for a slight drop in 2002/2003. In 2011/2012, spending on both edged down.
Spending on R&D increased from $3.9 billion in 1999/2000 to $7.6 billion in 2010/2011. It then decreased to $7.1 billion in 2011/2012.
Spending on related scientific activities rose from $2.4 billion in 1999/2000 to $4.3 billion in 2010/2011. It then decreased to $4.1 billion in 2011/2012.
