Chart 28.1 is a line chart showing the population by age group, observed from 1971 to 2010 and projected from 2011 to 2061.

In 1971, 29.3% of the population was aged 0 to 14. This proportion declined to 16.5% by 2010, with the greater part of the decline taking place from 1971 to 1980. From 2011 to 2061, this share is projected to be relatively stable, edging down to 15.7% by 2061.

The share of the population aged 15 to 64 followed a different pattern. This segment rose slightly from 62.7% in 1971 to 69.4% in 2010. It is then projected to decline from 69.2% in 2011 to 58.9% in 2061. Most of the projected decline occurs from 2013 to 2031.

From 1971 to 2010, the share of the population aged 65 and older increased from 8.0% to 14.1%. This segment is projected to rise from 14.4% in 2011 to 25.5% in 2061. Most of the projected increase occurs from 2011 to 2030.

The M1 projection scenario combines medium fertility, life expectancy, immigration and internal migration observed from 1981 to 2008.
