Research questions

  • Have small firms become larger because they are creating more jobs or because large firms are in decline?
  • If employment in small firms has been growing disproportionately, can the same be said about their productivity?
  • Are small firms creating higher quality jobs or is the quality of jobs that they are creating declining?
  • Is there evidence suggesting that the upward trend in small-firm employment share that was observed in the 1970s and 1980s continued in the 1990s?
  • What evidence suggests that Canada and the United States have followed similar paths in the expansion of small producers?
