Research questions

Our research on the dynamics of industrial competition focused on the amount of change in the business population that occurs as a result of entry and exit, growth and decline. The research under the firm strategies theme investigates how the underlying competencies differ across the firm population. Among the questions posed are:

  • What are the competencies on which growing small and medium-enterprises focus?
  • How important is innovation to growth?
  • What deficiencies lead to bankruptcy?
  • How does small-firm financing differ across types of innovators?
  • What are the characteristics of a firm that are associated with a failure?
  • How does the environment affect the innovation strategy chosen?
  • How does the science base of an industry affect the strategies in human resources that are pursued?
