This diagram is a visual representation of trade links in Canada. Total trade within Canada is represented by the full circle (in the same way that a clock represents twelve hours). When opening the diagram for the first time, provinces are displayed around the edges; the more total trade a province has, the more space it takes up on the circle. Each province is assigned a different colour. A trade flow from one province to another is represented by a "chord" or line from that province to the other. The line is coloured according to the exporting province. The line's thickness represents the value of that trade flow.
How to use this diagram
- To see the value of total trade (in millions of dollars) in and out of a region or province: hover your mouse over the outer circle labelled by the region or province name of interest.
- To see the volume of a trade flow between two regions or provinces: hover your mouse over the chord (line) itself. To view the full diagram again, move your mouse outside the circle.
- To expand a province into its Greater Economic Regions: click on the outer circle with that province name. This displays trade between the regions of that province with themselves and all of the other provinces. As with provinces, the total value of trade in and out of the GER or the value of trade with other GERs/provinces can be seen by hovering the mouse over the outer circle or lines. Two provinces may also be expanded into GERs in this way at any one time. Clicking on a third will collapse one of the current provinces. Clicking on an expanded province will collapse that province.
- To switch to a different year, click on the desired year in the row of grey buttons directly above the chord diagram.
Notes: Data are for 2004 to 2012. Values are in millions of dollars. Flows exclude commodities that are primarily moved by pipeline (conventional and synthetic crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and related products, crude and diluted bitumen) and, to preserve the confidentiality of the input-output tables, coal products. The "in" and "out" totals for a province (region) include within province (region) trade flows. No data are available for the territories. Intra- and inter-provincial trade totals are the sum of GER to GER trade and do not include those flows that are suppressed due to confidentiality and/or quality. As such, provincial totals are underestimated, but this effect is small in most cases because typically only small flows are suppressed. See CANSIM Table 386-0004 for more information.
