Inspections verify compliance with the
Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). They may be on-site (at
the site of a facility, plant, structure, border crossing, airport or other
port of entry, on a ship, aircraft, or other means of transport) or off-site.
Off-site inspections were previously called administrative verifications.
The tracking of off-site inspections or administrative
verifications only started in 1998/1999. However, on-site inspection
numbers prior to this time may have included some administrative verifications.
Investigations involve gathering, from a variety
of sources, evidence and information relevant to a suspected violation.
Written warnings indicate the existence of
a minor violation, in order that the alleged offender can take notice and
return to compliance.
Written directions oblige the regulatee responsible
for the potential violation to take all reasonable measures to remedy any
dangerous conditions and/or to reduce any danger to the environment.
A legal proceeding for the purpose of determining
the guilt or innocence of an accused (that is, person and/or organization)
under CEPA.
