The movement of a passenger over a distance of one kilometre. Passenger-kilometres are derived by multiplying the number of passengers by the distance travelled.

Common carrier railways operating in Canada that provide for-hire passenger and freight services are included. Excluded from the survey are companies that provide rail support services (bridge and terminal service etc.) and sightseeing tours.
