Potable water use by sector and average daily use — Province and territory
Table summary
This table displays the potable water volumes processed by drinking water plants by the sector of use, and the average daily residential and total use per capita of the population served, broken down by province and territory for 2011. The row headers are comprised of the Canada total and the province and territory names. The column headers are comprised of Potable water volume, Average daily residential use, and Average daily total use. The potable water volume header has the following subheaders: Residential; Industrial, commercial, institutional and other non-residential; Losses from the distribution system; Wholesale water provided to other jurisdictions; Sector of use unknown; and Total. These have units of millions of cubic metres. The Average daily residential use and the Average daily total use headers have identical subheaders: Volume per capita of the population served, with units of litres per person per day. The Average daily residential use header also has a subheader of Responding population served, with units of persons. The Residential subheader as well as both subheaders under Average daily residential use have a note which reads: "These figures represent the results for plants that reported the percentage of potable water used by the residential sector. Higher proportions of unknown water use reduce the accuracy of average daily residential water use estimates." The Wholesale water provided to other jurisdictions subheader has a note which reads: "For plants reporting wholesale water, other data sources and administrative data for the jurisdictions served was used as much as possible in order to allocate their water to the other categories." The Sector of use unknown subheader has a note which reads: "Some respondents did not know how a portion or all of their water was utilized." The subheader under the Average daily total use header has a note which reads "These figures represent the total population served by all plants and the total volume of potable water produced." The table has a note which reads "Figures may not add up to totals due to rounding."

These figures represent the results for plants that reported the percentage of potable water used by the residential sector. Higher proportions of unknown water use reduce the accuracy of average daily residential water use estimates.
For plants reporting wholesale water, other data sources and administrative data for the jurisdictions served was used as much as possible in order to allocate their water to the other categories.
Some respondents did not know how a portion or all of their water was utilized.
These figures represent the total population served by all plants and the total volume of potable water produced.
Note(s):
Figures may not add up to totals due to rounding.
