Analysis

In October 2014, aircraft take-offs and landings at 116 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 47,773 movements. Three airports, each with more than 2,000 movements, accounted for 20% of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (4,363 movements), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (3,204) and Red Lake, Ontario (2,044).

Total aircraft movements for the 107 airports for which year over year comparisons were possible fell to 46,428 from 48,128 in October 2013. The majority of these airports reported declines, led by Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (-939 movements), Stony Rapids, Saskatchewan (-463), and Sydney, Nova Scotia (-404). A large increase (2,042 movements) at the busiest airport, Peterborough, was insufficient to offset the declines reported by most airports.  The increase in movements at Peterborough may be due to the arrival of a new flight school which began operations in January 2014.

During October 2014, there were 35,175 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported by 97 airports with Goose Bay (3,204 movements) recording the greatest number.

Forty-seven airports reported 10,560 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 3,547 take-offs and landings, representing 34% of the total local movements reported.
