Analysis

In November 2015, take-offs and landings at 123 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 46,040 movements. Six airports, each with more than 1,500 movements, accounted for 33% of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (4,602 movements), Moosonee, Ontario (3,184), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (2,288), Red Lake, Ontario (1,732), Trois-Rivières, Quebec (1,690) and St. Theresa Point, Manitoba (1,591).

Total aircraft movements for the 113 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible rose from 42,267 in November 2014 to 44,153 in November 2015. Overall, the increases recorded at several airports, including Drummondville, Quebec (+841 movements), Peterborough (+720), and Collingwood, Ontario (+622), were sufficient to offset the declines reported at Red Lake (-636), Yorkton Municipal, Saskatchewan (-419), and Moosonee (-337).

During November 2015, there were 34,544 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported by 104 airports, with Moosonee (3,152 movements), Goose Bay (2,288), and Red Lake (1,602) recording the greatest number.

Forty-eight airports reported 9,438 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 4,098 take-offs and landings. Activity at this airport represented 43% of the total local movements reported.
