Analysis

In January 2016, take-offs and landings at 122 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 34,000 movements. Six airports, each with more than 1,300 movements, accounted for 28% of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (1,955 movements), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (1,793), Red Lake, Ontario (1,488), Moosonee, Ontario (1,461), Comox, British Columbia (1,390) and Pickle Lake, Ontario (1,337).

Total aircraft movements for the 116 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible decreased slightly from 33,583 in January 2015 to 33,463 in January 2016. Overall, the decreases recorded at Peterborough (-547 movements), Hay River, Northwest Territories (-420) and Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (-331) were sufficient to offset the gains reported at Moosonee (+497) and Trois-Rivières, Quebec (+487).

During January 2016, there were 26,531 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported by 103 airports. The largest numbers were recorded at Goose Bay (1,793 movements), Red Lake (1,454) and Moosonee (1,401).

Forty-four airports reported 5,264 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 1,722 take-offs and landings. Activity at this airport represented 33% of all local movements reported.
