Analysis

In August 2016, take-offs and landings at 117 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 63,587 movements. Ten airports accounted for forty-one percent of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (6,959 movements), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (3,233),Trois-Rivières, Quebec (2,609), Comox, British Columbia (2,090), Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (2,027), Red Lake, Ontario (2,019), Muskoka, Ontario (1,853), Tillsonburg, Ontario (1,791), Drummondville, Quebec (1,656) and Collingwood, Ontario (1,654).

Total aircraft movements for the 113 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible increased from 61,662 to 63,029 in August 2016 as 62 airports reported more movements. Overall, the increases recorded at Trois-Rivières (+705 movements), Drummondville (+445) and Charlo, New Brunswick (+315) were sufficient to offset the declines reported at Pickle Lake, Ontario (-676), Sherbrooke, Quebec (-381) and Island Lake, Manitoba (-267).

In August 2016, there were 45,213 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported by 99 airports with Goose Bay (3,233 movements) and Comox (2,090) recording the greatest number.

Forty-nine airports reported 15,690 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 6,376 take-offs and landings, representing 41% of the total local movements reported.
