Analysis

Take-offs and landings at 128 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 51,667 movements in October. Ten airports accounted for 39% of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (3,985 movements), Red Lake, Ontario (2,435), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (2,386), Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (2,188), Drummondville, Quebec (1,748), Trois-Rivières, Quebec (1,626), Pickle Lake, Ontario (1,488), Comox, British Columbia (1,481), Moosonee, Ontario (1,360) and Collingwood, Ontario (1,359).

Total aircraft movements for the 114 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible increased 7.0%, from 46,465 to 49,722 in October 2017, as 72 airports reported more movements. The largest increases were recorded at the following airports: Drummondville (+1,461 movements), Red Lake (+654) and Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional (+368). Among those airports with decreases, the largest declines were reported at Peterborough (-1,067) and Goose Bay (-631).

In October 2017, 109 airports reported 37,237 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another), with Goose Bay (2,386 movements) and Red Lake (2,115) recording the largest numbers.

Fifty airports reported 12,185 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 3,428 take-offs and landings, representing 28% of the total local movements reported.
