Employment Insurance statistics

Statistics Canada's Employment Insurance program has completed a revision of the beneficiaries' data series. With the April 2001 data release (see Key labour and income facts), Employment Insurance beneficiaries' data have been revised back to January 1997.

This report is a valuable tool for researchers, academics and students seeking information on demographic trends in Canada. The first part comprehensively reviews the Canadian demographic situation, describing recent trends in population growth, fertility, and migration, while the second part consists of four studies.


General Social Survey Cycle 14: Internet use, 2000

A public-use microdata file from Cycle 14 of the General Social Survey (GSS), the first cycle to collect detailed information on individuals' use of technology in Canada, is now available.


Private television broadcasters, 2000

Total employment of private television broadcasters decreased 1.0% in 2000 compared with 1999, the sixth consecutive year of decline. Over that period, the average weekly number of employees fell 8.0% from 8,273 to 7,624. The 2000 decline occurred in every region except Ontario, where employment increased by 2.8%.


Farm operators' total income, 1999

Farm operators obtained proportionally more income from non-farm sources in 1999 than in 1998, according to analysis of data from personal income tax returns.


Extraction system of agricultural statistics on CD-ROM, 2001

The 2001 Extraction system of agricultural statistics (ESAS) on CD-ROM contains an extensive collection of the most requested physical and financial data on farming. The product is a co-operative effort involving Statistics Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.


Manufacturing industries of Canada: National and provincial areas, 1998

The publication Manufacturing Industries of Canada: National and provincial areas, 1998 is now available. The publication is based on the Annual Survey of Manufacturers, which collects information on approximately 35,000 manufacturing establishments grouped into 259 national industries. The survey measures manufacturing production and provides an indication of the well-being of each industry and its contribution to the Canadian economy.


Innovation in Canadian manufacturing: National estimates, 1999

The working paper Innovation in Canadian manufacturing: National estimates is the first in a series that analyses results from the 1999 Survey of Innovation. The survey, conducted during the fall of 1999, shows that four out of every five Canadian manufacturing firms were innovative during the period 1997 to 1999.


Biotechnology Firm Survey, 1997

Revised data from the 1997 Biotechology Firm Survey are now available. The survey examined how biotechnologies were developed and used in Canada's industrial sector during the 1997 fiscal year.


National Construction Industry Wage Rate Survey, 2000

Data from the National Construction Industry Wage Rate Survey are now available for British Columbia. This survey was conducted on behalf of the Labour Program of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) to establish fair wage schedules for workers on federal construction projects. The survey was conducted in phases, starting with the Atlantic provinces in 1999.


Small area retail trade estimates database, 1998

The 1998 small area retail trade estimates for sales and the number of locations are now available by 1980 Standard Industrial Classification codes and by postal code.


Canada's international trade in services, 2000

Annual details of Canada's trade in services for 2000 are now available in Canada's international trade in services. This publication covers transactions in travel, transportation, and commercial and government services with Canada's trading partners. The main tables have been revised from 1997.


Geography working paper series

The Geography working paper series was begun to stimulate discussion on conceptual, methodological or technical issues involved in developing and disseminating geographic data, products and services. Readers of the series are encouraged to contact Statistics Canada with comments and suggestions.


Trends in the use of private education, 1987/88 to 1998/99

Children from both ends of the income distribution attend private schools; 29% of children who attend private schools are from families with incomes below $50,000, while 26% are from families with at least twice as much income.
