Canada and Australia: A comparison of economic performance

Despite a labour productivity gap in favour of Australia, Canada's standard of living grew at the same pace as Australia's during the late 1990s.

Rural economic diversification

Economic diversification increased in nearly two-thirds of Canada's rural communities from 1986 to 1996.


Labour Force Survey

Employment rose by an estimated54,000in November, the third consecutive monthly increase. Since August, employment has grown by166,000, much stronger than the52,000increase over the first eight months of the year.


Wage rates in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island

Workers employed by companies in New Brunswick tended to receive higher pay in most occupations compared with wages paid in Prince Edward Island.


Employment Insurance

The estimated number of Canadians receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits in September fell1.2% from August to579,900. This is the second monthly decline following six months of increases.


Payroll employment, earnings and hours

The average weekly earnings of payroll employees increased in September, offsetting a significant drop recorded for August. The new level stands1.3% higher than the level in September2002.


Registered apprenticeship training programs

More men and women than ever before registered in apprenticeship training programs in2001, as Canada's trades rebounded from the decline of the early1990s.


Consumer Price Index

The Consumer Price Index increased 1.6% in October from a year earlier. The 12-month increase in the CPI was 2.2% in September.


Wealth of immigrant families

In1999, immigrant families who arrived in Canada before1976had greater wealth holdings than their Canadian-born counterparts. However, the opposite pattern was observed among immigrant families who arrived after the mid-1980s.


Canada's retirement income programs

The financial reserves in Canada's principal retirement programs increased substantially during the1990s, although accumulation in the biggest program has levelled off since the turn of the century.


Monthly Survey of Manufacturing

Higher shipments, rising orders, and the fifth successive decline in inventories were the highlights reported by manufacturers in September, as Ontario rebounded from the effects of August's electrical blackout.


Canadian international merchandise trade

Merchandise trade rebounded in September, recovering most of the declines experienced in August, largely because of the power blackout in Ontario and the north-eastern United States.


New motor vehicle sales

In September, the number of new motor vehicles sold declined for a second consecutive month. However, while sales were down1.9% from August, this was the second smallest monthly change since the beginning of the year.
