Population of businesses with employees
Just over 1,045,900 Canadian businesses had employees in the second quarter of 2005, up 1.9% from the 1,025,500 figure for the same period last year.
Labour Force Survey
Employment was unchanged in July following an increase of 79,000 during the previous three months. The unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 6.8% in July, still among the lowest in almost three decades.
Urban and provincial income disparities
Provinces whose populations are more heavily concentrated in small cities and rural areas tend to have significantly lower per capita employment incomes. Across all 10 provinces, per capita employment incomes increased with the size of cities. Per capita incomes were also higher in cities compared with rural areas.
