Survey of 1986 Graduates

Description: This survey provided information on labour-market experiences of 1986 graduates in the two years following graduation, specifically focusing on employment-occupation and geographic shifts of a key youth group at a key time.

Who/what was surveyed: Graduates from Canadian postsecondary education institutions who graduated or completed the requirements for degrees, diplomas or certificates during the calendar year 1986, excluding graduates from private postsecondary institutions, continuing education (unless this led to a degree), part time trade courses for full time employees, some vocational programs and apprenticeship programs

How the data were collected: Telephone interviews

Geographic detail: Canada, provinces and territories

Demographic detail: age, sex, marital status, language spoken at home, mother tongue, dependent children, ethnic origin, place of birth

Information collected:
Postsecondary education, 1986 graduates: by socio-economic detail
- degree, diploma or certificate awarded, level of education attained
- principal residence, by province
- major field of study or specialization
- period of study, length in academic years
- participation in co-op program
- registration status: part-time, full-time
- leave of absence from studies, by reason
- reasons for part-time or non-continuous study
- highest level of study prior to the latest program and specialization
- work experience prior to postsecondary studies
- type of employment: business or industry duties
- activity prior to program of higher education
- reasons for absence from work
- reasons for not looking for job
- reasons for working part-time
- usual hours at work
- class of worker: paid worker, self-employed
- level of education needed for the current job
- work experience and skills required for the job
- job satisfaction
- income satisfaction
- length of job with same employer
- satisfaction with educational level, field of study, specialization
- financial aid taken from student loan program
- educational loan: current status
- age
- sex
- marital status
- language spoken at home
- mother tongue
- language of study
- number of dependent children
- personal income level
- educational level of parents
- ethnic origin, place of birth
- disability, if any, by type
- participation in Canada Employment and Immigration Commission financial assistance program

Sample size: 53,000 individuals

Data availability: 1988

Reference period: Several, depending on information collected - the major one is the first week of May 1988

Release dates: 1 1/2 years after the reference period

Response rates: 77%
