Provincial Wage and Salary Survey

Description: The objective of this survey is to produce statistical information on wages and salaries paid for various occupations classified to the 1990 National Occupation Classification (NOC).

The results of the survey help governments and businesses by providing accurate and up-to-date information on the wages paid by employers for workers in different occupations and industries.

This is a client-sponsored special survey that has been conducted in various provinces at different times. To date, the survey has been conducted in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1996, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan in 1998, and Ontario and New Brunswick in 1999.

Who/what is surveyed: Information about occupational characteristics is obtained from human resource managers of establishments with 6 or more employees.

How the data is collected: Computer-assisted telephone interviews

Geographic detail: Province; subprovincial detail is available for some surveys.

Information collected:

Hourly wages paid for specific occupations
Number of workers;
Unionized occupation;
Seasonal occupation and season start and end dates;
Number of part-time workers;
Usual hours of work per week;
Hourly wages paid: starting wages, without experience, with six months or more experience, after 1 year on the job, after 2 years on the job, after 3 years on the job, maximum
Number of full-time workers in this occupation;
Usual hours of work per week;
Amount of other cash compensation provided to workers in addition to their base salary or wage;
Number of workers in this occupation who are expected to vacate their positions over the next 12 months;
Additional workers expected to be hired over the next 12 months.
