Education indicators in Canada: Report of the Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program 2005

These statistical indicators of education in Canada cover various aspects of the elementary, secondary and postsecondary education, such as enrolment, graduation and human resources, as well as the financing of the education systems in Canada. In addition, the first chapter provides a statistical portrait of the school-age population while the last one shows measures of transitions from secondary to postsecondary education and to the labour market. Labour market outcomes are also included.

The Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program, or PCEIP, is a joint venture of Statistics Canada and the Council of Ministers of Education of Canada. The report was prepared jointly by the two organizations in collaboration with the provincial and territorial departments and ministries with responsibility for education and training. It is aimed at policy makers, practitioners and the general public.

Chapter A, A Portrait of the School-Age Population, focuses on demographic trends for the population aged 5 to 29 and considers indicators of cultural diversity and low income.

Chapter B, Financing Education Systems, looks at trends in public and private expenditures on education and reports on student debt.

Chapter C, Elementary-Secondary Education, includes indicators on pre-school children, enrolment and graduation at the elementary-secondary level, human resources, the use of information and communications technology in schools and student achievement.

Chapter D, Postsecondary Education, provides indicators for apprenticeship programs and universities, including participation and completion/graduation rates, as well as indicators of the number of university educators, their gender distribution and salaries. It also covers research and development, adult education and training and the educational attainment of the working-age population.

Finally, Chapter E, Transitions and Outcomes, looks at transitions from high school to postsecondary education and work and provides information on labour market outcomes by level of education.
