Figure 4 Adjusted risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth and preterm birth (PTB), by highest level of maternal education and economic family income adequacy quintile, singleton live births, Canada, 2004 through 2006

Description for Figure 4

When child sex, child birth year, region of birth, age group of mother, maternal ethnicity, birth order and marital status were taken into account, the risk ratios for SGA birth and for PTB were significantly high for women with less than secondary graduation, secondary graduation or a postsecondary diploma or certificate, compared with women who had a university degree.

When child sex, child birth year, region of birth, age group of mother, maternal ethnicity, birth order, marital status and maternal education were taken into account, the risk ratios for SGA birth were significantly high for women in lower economic family income adequacy quintiles, compared with those of women in the highest income adequacy quintile. However, when the same variables were taken into account, the risk ratios for PTB for women in lower economic family income adequacy quintiles were not significantly different from those of women in the highest income adequacy quintile.
