Parent-Child association in physical activity and sedentary behaviour

Insufficient physical activity and excessive sedentary time, particularly screen time, are negatively associated with a variety of physical and mental health indicators in children. Fewer than 10% of Canadian children meet the current guideline of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults has risen in Canada during the past 40 years. The most recent estimates indicate that a third of children are overweight or obese. Potential causes include genetics, family demographics, child and parent behaviour, and the larger economic and social environment in which children live.
