1. Data sources: Statistics Canada, Vital Statistics, Death Database and Demography Division (population estimates)
2. International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9).
3. Rates are age-standardized using the direct method, and the 1991 Canadian Census population structure. All rates are per 100,000 population. The use of a standard population results in more meaningful mortality rate comparisons, because it adjusts for variations in population age distributions over time and across geographic areas.
4. Health regions are defined by provincial governments as the areas of responsibility for regional health boards (i.e., legislated) or as regions of interest to health care authorities.
5. Rates in this table are based on three years of death data (for example, 1995 to 1997) which were summed and divided by three. This product was then divided by the population estimate of the middle year. The reference period associated with these data reflect the mid-point of the three-year period (for example, 1996).
6. Confidence intervals for age-standardized rates were produced using the Spiegelman method. Source: Spiegelman M. "Introduction to Demography", Revised Edition. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 1968, page 113, formula 4.29.
7. The 95% confidence interval (CI) illustrates the degree of variability associated with a rate. Wide confidence intervals indicate high variability, thus, these rates should be interpreted and compared with due caution.
8. Some age-standardized rates were suppressed (- -) due to both a very small underlying count plus extremely high variability.
9. In Prince Edward Island, the two health regions divide the province into urban and rural components. The province has defined these health regions for statistical purposes only.
10. In Nova Scotia, health regions are known as "health zones" and relate to the province’s administrative health region boundaries.
11. In Ontario, Public health units (PHU) administer health promotion and disease prevention programs, and District health councils (DHC) are advisory, health planning organizations.
12. Because of the small population of Churchill health region (4690), Manitoba (population: 1,110 in 1996), vital statistics data presented for region 4680 (Burntwood) are aggregates of Burntwood and Churchill regions.
13. In Saskatchewan, "service areas" have been created from groupings of the 33 health districts.
