Description for Map 1
Life expectancy at birth by health region, 2005–2007

This is a map of Canada divided in health regions; Populated areas are divided into three colours based on the life expectancy at birth of the region. Sparsely populated areas are grey.

The statistical significance was calculated at a 95% level of confidence to determine whether the data were significantly higher or lower than the Canadian average.

Populated areas are coloured green if their life expectancy at birth is significantly higher than that of Canada (listed at 80.7 years). Areas which are not significantly different than Canada are coloured yellow and areas which have a life expectancy at birth lower than Canada are coloured orange. White areas are regions for which data is not available.

Areas coloured as being above the Canadian average are concentrated in southern Québec, southern Ontario, Albertan and western British Columbia.

Areas coloured as being not significantly different than Canada are concentrated in southern Manitoba and southern Saskatchewan.

Areas coloured as being significantly lower than Canada are evenly distributed throughout Canada.
